4 Tips for a Successful City Break

If you’re trying to stick to a budget but still want to take a few days away, a city break is a great solution, even if you’ve got kids. There are so many amazing cities for you to check out, both at home and overseas, and these are steeped in adventure and history, packed with things to do for whatever you feel like doing. With that in mind, here are four tips for a successful city break.

Empire State Building, New York during day

Pick a Kid-Friendly Destination

This is perhaps the most critical part of choosing a city break. The kids will want to do something, so make sure you find something with a variety of things for them to do and what the parents want to do.

This could be as simple as going to a local park for them to play in, or you can find museums that will make learning fun for them. Besides this, you want to make sure the city is safe, and that it isn’t too busy that you don’t lose them in the crowds.

Take Lots of Snacks With You

If you follow the golden rule of city breaks, which is walking as much as possible, you and your kids will eventually run low on energy. This can make you moody, frustrated, and ruin the trip entirely.

Because of this, you must bring plenty of snacks and keep the energy levels up throughout the day. Chocolate bars and healthy snacks are useful, as they can provide the sugar rush everyone needs to keep walking, even if all you want to do is sit down.

Research the Rental Property

For some people, the success of a trip can hinge entirely on the rental property’s quality, so you must find something that can comfortably accommodate you and your family when you’re searching through apartments in the area.

Ideally, you want a property that’s close enough to everything you can walk everywhere easily while also being out of a dangerous neighbourhood. Besides this, the apartment or house must be large enough for you to all relax and have a kitchen so you can make meals some evenings if you don’t want to go out to eat.

Don’t Stick To Your Plan Too Much

While it’s important to have a plan for your trip, you shouldn’t stick to this plan too closely. There will always be something that happens that might mean you need to look for other things to do. But this is okay

The weather might make your riverboat trip impossible. You might realise that the museum is not as exciting as you thought it would be. If this is the case, feel free to abandon it. You won’t feel you’ve wasted the day, and you might stumble across something you never knew about.

Breakaway

Any family holiday can be stressful, but with these tips, you should manage every stage of the trip without any hassle. Hopefully, you’ll have done enough research so that even if things don’t entirely go to plan, you can still find something to do.

Thanks, Ash. It is hard with everything going on. I’m desperate to plan some trips next year but with everything going on, I’m holding on until the Spring. I can’t wait to travel and do days outs again without so many restrictions.

  2. Haha I’ve forgotten about checking the rental place very well once or twice and I’ve ended up in horrible places a few times. Great tips!

Thank you, Lisa. I cancelled one once because I checked reviews within weeks of our arrival date and they were all awful! Thankfully I did and we stayed somewhere that was lovely. I am more inclined these days to have a cancellation period incase.

  3. Oh I definitely need a city break soon but it’s difficult now with everything going on. I hope to travel soon! Great blog post, thanks for sharing 🙂
