7 Benefits of Spending Time with Family

The meaning of what a family is has changed considerably over the years. Some of us might consider our friends as a part of our family, whereas others like to stay with traditional notions of kinship regarding what constitutes a family. Whatever your story may be, it is undeniable that being close to your family is one of the most significant relationships anyone should nurture. For this reason, we have listed seven benefits of spending time with family so that you can inspire yourself and embrace the gratitude and humility of having your family in your life. Be it going on a camping trip or playing board games, whatever you do will benefit your family tremendously.

Building a stronger bond with the members of your family

One of the most apparent reasons for spending more time with your family is that communication and activities you do together are the best way to strengthen your ties.

When one of the family members is absent for long periods, doing fun family activities can compensate for those missed moments. For example, whenever you organise a family Christmas movie marathon, you are inconspicuously strengthening your family ties.

Also, it has been proven that children with parents who insist on spending time together have a developed sense of trust and honesty toward other people in their lives. The best way to build a stronger bond between your parents, children, or grandchildren is to frequently engage in activities that involve talking and spending time together.

You will always have a helping hand in your life

The truth is that your family will always be on your side, no matter the circumstances or fights that might have occurred. Simply, it is tough to feel ambivalent toward your children, your parents, or members of your extended family. This realisation alone is beneficial for your sense of belonging and trust – by spending time with your family, you will always have a shoulder to cry on and someone to rely on if things get tough.

So, there is no reason why you should be a stranger – keep your relatives close, and you will never walk alone.

You will always have someone who will appreciate you

It is perfectly normal for every human being to seek confirmation from other people. Spending time with your family members is one way you will feel appreciated and accomplished as a person. The smiles, chit-chats, and hugs you receive tell you that you are worthy and loved. So, be sure to devote yourself to your family as much as you can to feel confident about yourself at all times.

You will always have a person who you can confide in

Just as spending time with your family allows you to have someone on your side no matter what kind of hardship comes your way, the same goes for having someone with whom you can share your secrets, insecurities, or just what happened to you that day.

Of course, having such a support system has to be worked on and built on over time. For this reason, you must devote the time and talk to your mother, father, sister, or child as often and as much as you can. Spending time in other ways will also make you closer, and for that reason, much more open to discussing your life with your family.

You will be able to share moments spent together

Spending time together also enables you to share what you feel and own with other people. Essentially, material possessions only make sense when you have someone to share them with. So, spending more time together can be vital for sharing both important and insignificant emotions, thoughts, and things in life.

For this reason, you must use every opportunity you can to show your kids or grandkids that you care about them. Having matching outfits for the youngest and the oldest members of your family is a fun way to tie your family gathering into a fun and unforgettable event that everyone present will be able to remember and retell for years. In this way, something as simple as a T-shirt becomes a collectively shared memory that will instigate more wonderful family moments for years to come.

You will be able to talk to your children and teach them the right values

Spending time with your family is not all about fun and games (although, luckily, it mostly is). Taking the time out of your busy day to spend at least an hour or two with your loved ones is essential for establishing a ‘rapport system,’ that is, a mutual feeling of reliability, trust, and respect.

It would help if you spent time with your kids or grandkids because you will teach them important lessons in life by talking about different issues daily. It is impossible to catch up with children and their development when you miss out on what troubles them from day to day, what makes them feel good or bad, and what they are inclined to do in different situations. So, turn off the TV, gather your kids around the kitchen table, and start talking about anything that comes to mind.

You will be able to accept each other’s differences

One of the most important perks of spending time with family is the fact that there is no better way to accept your family member as the individual they are. It is challenging to retain the sense of trust and understanding that allows you to grasp what the person is experiencing and track the changes in their outlook on life.

As you can see, there are many benefits of spending time with family and all of them guarantee a happier and fuller life during these turbulent times when we are often confined to our homes, what better way to spend our time than bonding with the most important people in our lives.

Thank you, Della. Hopefully this year we will get to spend more time with our family and not just via zoom or facetime 🙂

  2. I could not agree with you more, spending time as a family has so many benefits for everyone involved. In our home our goal is to sit down for dinner every night. It doesn’t always happen with all activities going on. But it’s such a great way to check in, connect and have great conversations. Last year was bad in many ways, but one great thing that came out of it was plenty of family time!!
