Your Appearance Really Does Affect Your Career Prospects. Here’s How:

Most people would like to live in a world where their career progression depends on performing work to a high standard. But that’s not how it works in the real world. Your success comes down to performance, but partly it comes down to appearance. In other words, the way you look matters.

This phenomenon seems to apply across the board to both women and men. More attractive people tend to progress further in the workplace, and it’s a fact of life. Researchers have investigated many hypotheses for why this might be the case. Perhaps the most exciting idea is that people like attractive people more than their less attractive counterparts. Looking at a good-looking person is a pleasant experience that provides immediate value, setting managers and colleagues up for reciprocity.

Another theory is that attractiveness is a mark of fitness. The better a person looks, the more likely they are to cope physically with positions of responsibility.

There’s also the idea that physical attractiveness relates intimately to a person’s innate characteristics. According to medium.com, people with great hair and beautiful skin look after themselves, deferring gratification in their personal lives.

Whatever the reason, appearance can make a difference. Thus, if you want to get ahead in your career, you’ll want to take advantage of this fact, even if you don’t like the idea in principle.

Here are some quick ways to dramatically boost how you look and progress your career.

Get Your Teeth Whitened

Professional sites like Bowralstreetdentalpractice.com.au talk about the benefits of whitening teeth. Having white teeth is perhaps the most significant factor people concentrate on when assessing your appearance, except maybe your weight. Bright teeth are a signal of prestige, health, and wealth. But interestingly, you don’t need a lot of money in your bank account to make a difference in how they look. Most cosmetic treatments today are immensely affordable. Whitening your teeth projects a dramatically new image of who you are and gives you the confidence to bare your teeth in social interactions.

People will also judge you on how you smell in the workplace. If you have close friends you trust, you can ask whether they’ve noticed any unpleasant aromas from your body. Thank them for their honesty and adjust your showering habits if they have.

Avoid Inflammatory Foods

Makeup can help bring out the best in your appearance. But what you want is to rely on it less. Reducing your intake of pro-inflammatory foods can profoundly affect your skin, helping to reduce breakouts and evening tones.

Try replacing meat with beans. And avoid processed food. If you want to snack during the day, eat fruit instead.

  1. You are right. A well-groomed person will be easily liked and accepted. Career progression does depend on your performance, but a well-groomed and presentable person can achieve that at a faster pace than others. The principles are the same across the world. The tips sound simple and easily doable.

A friend of mine is just stunning and secures jobs easier being 6ft tall, attractive, well-groomed and slim. I hate being the person to point that out compared to me who is 5ft tall, more weight around the middle and just not attractive. It shouldn’t matter but it does. Thank you for commenting 🙂
