As a family, we love our UK holidays, and Cornwall is our happy place but let’s not forget our little sprinkle of Disney and our 2nd happy place Disneyland Paris. That isn’t to say that we don’t want to explore a little more of the world, but it can be an overwhelming experience even considering further afield with a special needs child.

Welcome to A Little Bit Social, a family lifestyle and travel blog with the disabled traveller in mind. Our son Thomas has cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning difficulties, making our lives a little more complicated than just booking a flight, jumping in a car, or booking a quick trip. We have to consider his disabilities and needs. When I started this blog back in early 2019, it was my way of sharing our journey with the world. So I wanted to share a little bit about me and the rest of the family.

Why A Little Bit Social

In 2018, before the likes of the coronavirus had invaded our lives, I started a blog discussing family life and all things relating to special needs; however, by 2019, I couldn’t get it moving. I struggled to share things about my family for fear of trolls, and I also wanted to respect Thomas. He can’t give me permission to post or upload, so after a few months, in January 2019 – A Little Bit Social was launched.

An odd name for a travel blog, I get that, but at the time, nothing inspired me, and it was never going to be just about travel. A Little Bit Social is my dedication to a pre-verbal child who loves being sociable. The correct term for being social is ‘interaction with other people, especially for pleasure and a busy social life.’

So, in a nutshell, you will find lots of travel, lifestyle, careers, well-being and the occasional random post that embraces family life. Does that mean I’ve niched down? I’ve attempted it, so time will tell.

Disabled Traveller

Thomas was ten months old when we had our first family holiday, and Alana was 4. Our holidays were very different then, as Thomas was still a baby with the usual everyday needs, but we’ve had to adapt over the years. With age, his disabilities have become more prevalent, with physical, sensory and learning difficulties presenting a new outlook on how we experience travel. We have to consider medication, equipment, sensory overload, and his behaviour.

Our holidays are very different now; however, I believe that travel should be accessible to everyone. Part of the concept of A Little Bit Social is you will come on a journey with us as we look to adapt to Thomas’ ever-changing needs and eventually purchase a caravan to assist in our travels and finally take him on an aeroplane.
