How to Know it’s time to change your career path

Most kids get to an age at school where they are expected to determine what they want to do for the rest of their lives once they leave education. However, those same kids who grow up to be working adults will also know that careers don’t always go their way, and they may find that by the time they reach the grand old age of thirty, they don’t enjoy doing the same things as they did at age 16. For most, the prospect of changing careers can be daunting at any age–but it’s worth knowing that it’s never too late to seek professional fulfilment if you’re feeling dissatisfied with where your career takes you. Here are several reasons why it’s time to change your career path if you’re frustrated with where you are currently.

Your likes and dislikes may have changed

Life will have doubtless changed for you since you started your career. For example, you may not have been in the position to take a job on the Greek Islands, but now you are. Or, you may have the added responsibility of looking after a family, which will mean that certain jobs will be unsuitable for your new family dynamic. It’s natural for your likes and dislikes to evolve as a result–and that can go as far as your career, too.

There’s also the fact that the world is constantly evolving around us. Some of the careers out there may not have existed when you first started full-time employment, and now you’d like to try your hand at something new. All of which is perfectly fine and natural.

You’re not challenged enough in your current role

It’s one thing to become really good at your job from doing it for a very long time, but then there’s being bored in your role. We spend on average 40 hours a week at work, so that’s at least 40 hours worth of frustration and boredom if you’re in a role that makes you feel unchallenged.

You may have reached the top of your tree in your current career, but you’re still not content. So why not use some of the transferable skills you picked up during your previous employment? It may feel as though you’re only destined for one career path once you’ve been on it for a few years, but career change is possible due to all of the things you have managed to learn in the duration of your employment, education, or life.

Finding something new will give you the potential to grow in a job that suits you and your current lifestyle much more.

  1. There are days when I’m totally fed up or bored or annoyed or frustrated with my job. But its also interesting and challenging. I’ve been paired with a mentor this year so I’m going to see how that works out before making any decisions.

It’s always hard. I usually say you know when you know. I’m pleased you find it interesting and challenging. I like a job where no day is the same. Hoping all goes well with your mentor ?

      1. Thanks, it’s the people more than the work who hack me off.
