Every parent wants their child to do well at school and foster a love of learning that will help them succeed in life. With the recent lockdown, parents worldwide have recognised just how difficult it can be for teachers to inspire kids and get them to concentrate on tasks, and this has given them a new perspective on making learning fun for kids. If you want to continue this tradition once they make it back to school, here are four tips to encourage a love of learning.
Show Interest In What They Study
Kids love to tell you what they have learned on any given day, but if you seem disinterested, they will take this as a sign that they shouldn’t be interested either. Showing that you care about what they have learned by listening to their essays or looking at crafts, and even joining them on a school trip in the UK, will confirm that it is worth listening to and learning at school. The more engaged you are, the more engaged your children will be, and this will give them a superb base to build upon.
Talk About Their Future
Whether your kids are five or fifteen, it’s useful to talk about their future so they can understand what avenues to take to achieve their dreams and ensure self-confidence and mental wellbeing. If your child wants to be a doctor, encourage an interest in their Science lessons. If they want to be a writer, English should be a focus. Of course, kids can be fickle with their interests, and they will go back and forth plenty of times throughout their school years. Still, giving them an idea of how to become what they want to become will help keep them on course and allow them to align their focus if they stray off-course.
Offer Learning Alternatives
Not all kids take to school the way that they are expected to. They just don’t get along with the sitting down and listening model that many schools still follow. This can cause them to be resistant to learning. But it is not the learning that is the problem. Instead, it is the method. You can encourage alternative learning options, such as interactive games or activities that will inspire their passion for education. For example, physical interaction with ideas, like seeing bugs and plants up close, is a fantastic way to get kids interested in nature that they can’t always get from the classroom.
Work With Their Teacher
While you want to help your child succeed, you can’t be with them all the time. However, if you’ve undertaken homeschooling duties across the last 100-or-so-days, you understand a little more about how your child is at school. Take this experience to work with teachers so you can find the right teaching approach, which will give your child a chance for success at school.
Setting Up for Success
It’s your responsibility as a parent to give your children all the tools you can to ensure success in life. Often, they only get one shot at building the right habits to help them in their education, so it’s crucial to assist them by inspiring a love of learning whenever you can.
